Size of temp folder in documents and settings

Hi,

Folder C:\Documents and Settings\(my name)\Local
Settings\Temp is occupying a space of 546MB.
OS is Windows 2000.

Why this folder is occupying so much size...?

Is it safe to empty this folder...?

With no applications and or installs running and after restart, you can
