Using Office 2007 and Windows XP

I created a Power Point show and saved it in the 2007 format. Then I
immediately did a "save as" so that I could also have a 2003 compatible
format. I didn't make any changes of any kind, but the size of the two
files are drastically different.

Any ideas??

Correct. Office 2007 uses OpenXML format which compresses the file.

Thanks for the explanation.

When you save backwards, PPT 2007 tries to preserve the look of the
presentation even if that has to be at the expense of editability.

Your presentation probably uses some of the new effects in 2007; since
these aren't supported in earlier versions, they get converted to images
(and saved in their original form in case you reopen in 2007). An image
of text or a graphic will *always* involve a LOT more data than the text
or graphic itself. You get both. So the presentation grows like kudzu on
fertilizer.

While the new XML format is indeed compressed, that probably doesn't
account for such large differences. The old binary PPT format is
compressed also. The XML is stored in a ZIP archive format; ZIPping the
older format files gives you very little additional compression.
