Size of .avi

When I created my .avi from MM2, the properties say the 15 minute movie is
over 3GB. When I use my authoring software to create a DVD, only about 600
mb are used on the DVD.

Does this make sense?

Yes, the MPEG-2 file created from the DV-AVI file is much more compressed.
Your authoring software does the conversion.
