guys,

In a scenarario, up 600 sites with 128kbps links, how can I deploy a AD?
All sites comunicate with a datacenter through VPN.

thanks

Myke,

Carefully?

Seriously though, that's a impossible question to answer with just the
information you've given. While topology plays an important part, it's
only one piece of the puzzle.

I wouldn't post, however, if I couldn't offer you something. So
checkout the MS' whitepaper "Windows Server 2003 Active Directory
Branch Office Guide" found here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...F6-A8A8-40BB-9FA7-3A95C9540112&displaylang=en

It should be able to act as a spring board into your domain and
directory planning.

Read what Tim wrote (elsewhere this thread).

And know that it CAN work, but you really have to
test carefully (<grin>), and factor in not just the NOMINAL
bandwidth (e.g., 128kbps) but the available and effective
bandwidth, latency, quality of the connection, etc.

In principle, it can work with much less bandwidth (, or
become unworkable with more.)

Is this all going to be hierarchical to a central hub site?

Is the network already in place? (e.g., working and routable?)

How large are the sites (computers and users)?

How large is the total?

8 computer per site (or less), 2 users per site (can be more)

2600 computer (xp machines)

In such small sites you will likely have no DCs
nor DNS servers locally so you will probably not
put a lot of (new) stress on the WANS.

Authentication should work ok. Presumably you are
doing something similar now (perhaps less efficiently.)

Are you converting from something else? What services
do they currently access and what new features or services
will the remote sites expect from the central sites?

That's not a "big" AD -- it's small to medium.

I should also have asked what sort of bandwidth
remains on the WANS (of the 128) typically.

You should likely setup a test and try this for a
few users at a couple of sites.

Also note that you may be able to use a cachine
only (or secondary) DNS server at some of the
sites if you routers already support that.

Be careful of LARGE GPOs across the WAN.
