We have two locations that are well connected (150Mbit/sec ATM) and part of
the same site. Each location is in its own network, connected by routers on
each side of the ATM cloud and each location has a DC. I've been told that,
even within the site, workstations should prefer the DC in their own
network/location. In practice, workstations end up with either DC as a
logonserver, even if it means crossing routers.

Should I be worried?

You can control which DC will respond to authentication with sites. The
client will ask the DNS for a DC within the same site first.
