we are running W2k with two DC's and one Dns server, we are
behind a Sonicwall pro firewall. we have been able to access the
website www.ims.ca up until yesterday. I can get to it from outside
our network and I can do a nslookup and ping it. what can I look for
on our network for a reason for not being able to access this site.

Hi Pat,

Thank you for your reply.

I would like to confirm if you could ping or do a nslookup inside the
network. If the two commands work, I think the DNS server works fine.

If the commands fail, I suggest you refer to the following method to
troubleshoot the issue.

1. Ping the IP of the www.ims.ca (205.189.47.221).

2. Use nslookup and let me know the error you receive in nslookup.

3. If the issue occurs on all the inside computers and you could ping the
web site, please check the internal DNS server and find out if you forward
the DNS request to an external DNS server. If so, please forward the DNS
request to another external DNS server.

To find out the forward information, please refer to the following article.

300202 HOW TO: Configure DNS for Internet Access in Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=300202

4. If the client could not ping the IP address of the web site, you may
need to contact the ISP or the firewall to check if the web site is blocked.

For more information on troubleshoot DNS issue, please refer to the
following article.

316341 HOW TO: Troubleshoot DNS Name Resolution on the Internet in Windows
2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=316341

This article describes methods that you can use to configure Domain Name
System (DNS) if queries that are destined for the Internet are not resolved
properly, but local intranet name-resolution works correctly. The cache
file on your Windows 2000-based server might be corrupted, missing, or out
of date. You can replace the cache file with an original version of the
cache file, or you can manually enter the correct root hints in the cache
file from the DNS console.

Have a nice day!
