Scenario:
Dallas Site
DC1 192.168.1.x
DC2 192.168.2.x
DC3 192.168.3.x

If I have a site called Dallas and underneath that site I
have DC1, DC2, and DC3. Each of the DC's have a
different subnet associated with it. Each server has a
global catalog server and AD integrated DNS.

If a user on DC1 logins where he/she try and authenticate
first? What if DC1 goes down. Where will they
authenticate now? Will they try and authenticate from
DC2 and DC3?

Brian!

Howdy! Howdy!

Take a look at the following two MSKB Articles. They
explain how WIN2000 and WINXP Clients find a DC for
authentication. Essentially, the clients are looking for
a SRV Record. This is part of DNS ( and DNS is all
important in WIN2000 as it is involved in just about
everything!!! ):

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-
us;247811 ( for WIN2000 clients )

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;
[LN];314861 ( for WINXP clients )

However, be aware that it is possible that DCs from
another Site might register "generic" records in the
Dallas Site and that the clients in the Dallas Site might
actually go over the WAN link to authenticate against a
DC from another Site.

Also, if you upgraded from WINNT 4 to WIN2000 AD you
might want to check out the following MSKB Article:

us;284937
