I am having trouble all of a sudden with IE regarding accessing Microsoft
sites from my office PC:

www.microsoft.com
www.msnbc.com
www.msn.com
www.hotmail.com

I can access all other sites with no problem at all.

IT dept says they're not blocking any sites; my co-workers have no trouble.

Only thing I did was remove and old version of Realplayer and Mediaplayer

I have scanned for viruses and used Adaware to clean for possible trouble
there.

All to no avail.

What could possibly be doing this?

Hi Roland,

What happens when you go to a command prompt (MS-DOS) window and type the
following command line?

ping www.microsoft.com

Also, what are the results of this command line?

tracert www.microsoft.com

Finally, you may also want to ping the proxy server. To locate the Proxy, go
to Internet Options, Connections tab, and click the Lan Settings button.
Ping the server listed under Proxy server using the following syntax:

ping <servername>

If any of the 3 command lines timeout, you may want to contact your IT
department for further assistance. If they complete successfully (pings
return OK), you may have some kind of software issue preventing you from
connecting to the sites you have listed below.

Good luck and I hope this helps you get closer to solving your issue.

Hi Jeremy,
The 1st two are going to time out - being from Microsoft, you should know
that microsoft doesn't take pings or a tracert. The tracert will go for a
bit, but when it gets to microsoft will start timing out.

Check for a file named HOSTS with no extension (not Hosts.sam). It may be a
hidden file. Open it with Notepad and remove any line referencing the site.
Or, rename HOSTS to OLDHOSTS

I did that, it was 0 bytes. I will try the other suggestions on monday
morning. Thanks.
