Pardon my luddite.....

I have recently purchased a WINFAST 760GXK8MB, socket 754 tower unit.
It has some SIS extreme graphics onboard thingy which I was reliably
assured was crap.....which I believed as none of my games worked
anymore....

I went and got my sapphire radeon 9600 out of the old machine and
plugged it into mine (this does not make me an expert before you flod
me with science)....the machine booted and the monitor sat quietly
doing mothing....tried both sockets...still nothing but an amber light.

I understand the answer is in BIOS (Phoenix).

Both knowledge aand bottle required to proceed further....

(have unplugged card now and all is working again.

Thanks in advance

This obviously contains the cute board reviewed here, made by Foxconn:

This is a lot slower than even a 64-bit FX5200, so it definitely is
nothing for gamers. Plenty good enough for Q3A though ;).

Put the card in again. Make *absolutely* sure it's seated 100% properly
(preferably 200%). The exact same thing happened when we tried to
install the same type of card onto an MSI K7 Master here, the second
attempt fixed this. As you can see in the review, your board can run a
9800 Pro without issue so I don't see why a 9600 would not work. The
good thing about these Athlon64 based boxes is that the chipset has
virtually no more influence on memory performance.

Is there a "Graphic Adapter Priority" setting in the BIOS ?
If the machine seems to boot, but the 9600 shows no output,
it could be that the VGA connector on the motherboard is
still the primary video output device.

It is unfortunate that the Foxconn manual chooses not to
document all BIOS options. Some of the sub-menus do not
receive any help from the manual.

Thanks for the reply.....I had already tried to set 'init display' to
AGP and still had the same problem.
I was told by someone today that the board I have bought is a bottom
feeder and now I am well and truly panicking.

Have got the same manual as the link but it is not in luddite. Without
sounding pathos.....I think I am worse off now after upgrading.....

IS this problem unusual?

Stephan,

Had another bash at ramming the card in.....(whilst still keeping cool
enough not to snap it in half). Could it be this simple? Tried it three
times and still nothing.

What I don't understand is that even if I leave the settings to PCI
first and leave the monitor in the PCI slot...it still will not work!!

Does that indicate something significant???

(That aside...your input did help me solve my firewire card
problem...that is fine now after checking it was in properly)

Thanks for the help so far guys.

"You can adjust the amount of system RAM reserved for the
onboard video using the motherboard's BIOS. However, unlike
Intel's solution, you can't use both the onboard video
concurrently with an AGP card. No dual monitors for you!"

What that tells me, is the board is of the type, that either
uses the built-in graphics, or it uses an AGP or PCI card.
The "Init Display" probably doesn't have onboard video
as an option, due to the either/or nature of video selection.
If AGP, PCI, or AGP and PCI cards were present, the built-in
would be disabled in all three cases.

The next thing I would try, is setting the AGP rate lower.
Try AGP at 1X and see if you can get the card to respond.
The nice thing about the ATI video card driver, is it
ignores the BIOS setting - if you can get 1X to work in the
BIOS, then SmartGART will attempt to use whatever common
rate the Northbridge and video card share, once you boot
Windows.

In the "good ole days", a jumper on a motherboard could be
used to disable onboard graphics. I don't see these BIOS
methods beihg an improvement on the jumper.

It could be, that the video card really isn't working at
all in the motherboard. But, if that were the case, the
BIOS would continue to use the built-in video. Since it has
switched to the AGP video card (and disabled the built-in
graphics in the process), it must be some other BIOS
issue (VESA mode maybe?) that is holding it up.

Thanks to all of you.....

Friend of mine 'bullied' the card in properly (needed a little bend of
the metal to hook it outside of the motherboard.....

Something simple but very irritiating and I had a heart attack watching
my mate ram it in with his foot.

Thanks all

You are just so lucky to have a mate who helps you like this.
