Hi -

I am wondering what to use as a backup DC on a single-site new 2000
domain. From my research I have found that it is not advised to have
two 2000 DCs in a single subnet (for some reason)--but I want a
failsafe in case the one DC goes down. I need to deploy a new
NT/Exchange 5.5 Server into this network, should I just make it a BDC?
I was kinda hoping to go to native mode and leave that NT server
standalone. But I guess that makes more sense than deploying another
2000 DC on a network of less than 20 machines. Thanks for your input!

I don't know who would advise you not to have two DCs in the same subnet,
there's no reason not to.

I have read a lot an never ever heard of not having more than one W2K domain
controller on a subnet?? Two is good to have. You could use the NT server, but the NT
server will only hold the user database and not be able to be write to as far as
password changes, new accounts, etc. The NT server also does not understand AD and
would not have any Group Policy or AD dns zone so it really would not be a "backup"
for a W2K domain controller. I say go with the additional W2K domain controller. ---
