single char filenames & color depth switch

I have a user who is experiencing some interesting problems with
Powerpoint 2000. Every time the user attempts to save a file, only the
first character of the filename is used. For instance, if I select
File, Save As... and input "Presentation2002" as the filename, the
file is saved as "P.ppt". Also, when I view the application's options,
the various dropdowns and text boxes only display the first character
as well.

The other problem is that every time Powerpoint starts, the screen
goes black for a second, then the display comes back at a lower color
depth. When closing the program, the display resets back to full color
depth.

I have tried using the repair process. I have also completely
uninstalled Office, cleaned the registry, and reinstalled. I even
tried importing the relevant Office registry data from another machine
that is working fine. All to no avail. Anybody have any ideas?
