OK I now am thinking to set up a pc where it holds my hard drives and
another which serves as my primary. I have tried USB direct link to
get files from one PC to the other in testing but large files are
slower than molasses on a cold winter night! Both machines have NIC
cards, any way to use these devices to transfer faster?

you can network the machines
all you should need is a "crossover" cable

True, but if the primary goal is transferring "large files"
and both machines don't have gigabit NICs, another options
would be to get gigabit nics which don't need a crossover
type cable, only regular cable. That's significantly more
expensive but "significant" might only be $30 for two of the
lower-end cards, which often sacrifice that last few %
performance but would still typically be 3X faster than
100Mb.

Both machines have nic built into the mobos

One mobo is ASUS A7N8X Deluxe w/ nVidia lan & 3-D com lan Ethernet
Adapters
my new mobo is ASUS P5P800 w Marvell Yukon 88E8001 Gigabit Ethernet
Adapter
So does this mean I can use the crossover cable and are there any
sites to help me set up a network if I can use the crossover cable?

Because one is a Gigabit adapter, you should not need a
crossover cable. Simply connect the two with a regular
cable and (depending on exactly how you want it set up)
there are several networking tutorials on the net. Briefly
in Network properties you need "File and Printer Sharing"
installed, then enable sharing for the resources you want
shared. The tutorials can better list everything step by
step than I could describe it, plus their screenshots may
help.

If you don't need two NICs in the A7N8X, you might as well
disable one of them prior to setting this up. Either should
be fine for this use and will have similar performance
albeit only at 100Mb so randomly pick one. IIRC the 3Com is
the bottom of the two jacks on the board, but double-check
this as I may be wrong.

Yes. You need to buy an ethernet Cat. 5 "Cross-over" cable and connect it
to the NIC port on each of the two computers. It is a special cable that
some computer stores carrry. Do NOT use a standard Cat. 5 cable.

The Gigabit network adapter in one of the motherboards
allows auto MDIX, as do all gigabit adapters. What that
means is, regardless of whether one uses a straight or
crossover cable the adapter will do the exact same thing,
make it's own determination of what to do.

There is no benefit for the OP to use a crossover cable, it
is not needed.
