sims deluxe will not work HELP

All my daughter wanted for christmas was a scooter, and this game. The
scooter came broken, and I can't get this stupid game to work!!! I have
windows xp pro, the first time i tried to install this game, it kept telling
me i had the wrong disc in during installation!! I am blonde, but i know how
to count, and read!! so I started over, re-installed and now it seems to
want to start, then goes back to the windows screen!!! Is there a SANTA'S
HELPER out ther that can help me get this hateful game to work for me before
the weather breaks and the sims turn into frisbees?? PLEASE HELP ME SANTA,
I promise I'll be a good girl this year!!!!

I was reading a thread recently where someone else solved the
exact same problem by installing the Sims Updates:
