Simple sum won't work

One complete fool

I am creating a report that will list the cost of a number of items
sorted only by the date of the request.

At the end I want the total cost of all requests. I am using:

(=sum[cost]) in a text box in the footer. It keeps giving me errors.

What am I missing?
 
There is not even a full page on the report.

I am placing the sum in the report footer. I have made it larger and
am putting it above the default page and date fields.
