Apologies for what may be a possibly idiotic question but I'm not familiar
with XPE.

We have a situation where we want to provide a PC to the public for browsing
the Internet. Even the smallest desktop is too big for the space so I'm
wondering if there is any reason why we can't use a thin client running XPE
and just use IE that comes with it?

Space is the only reason this is being asked, I can get a thin client and
strap it to the back of a LCD monitor.

Nothing agains this solution!
You can define the IE as your shell.
This will be a very smart and small solution.

IE can be used as the shell. You can put it in kiosk mode so it takes up the
full screen.

There is a small drawback with one of the scroll bars always there, which is
why some developers use FireFox instead. The choice is up to you.
