How hard is it to network just two computers together that
both use Windows XP?

I would like to use both computers at the same time with
just one Internet connection. Both computers are in the same room.

See the articles in XP's "help" on networking.

It's pretty easy as long as you follow the instructions with respect to
hardware and hookup, and use the network wizard.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Hi Steve,

Not much complicated. You need to purchase NIC cards for the two systems [no need for a HUB for two systems] and create a home network using Windows XP Network Setup Wizard [Which automatically shares the Internet Connection and creates file shares]. I read it's also possible with a DirectParallel cable setup, but haven't tried it practically myself.

The following MS-KB explains this in detail:

How to Set Up a Small Network with Windows XP Home Edition (PART 1):
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=813936 (8 Parts available)

Or, you may buy a router and share the internet connection [without depending upon XP ICS]

Just to add to Ramesh in this thread:
Direct cable is problematic. People spend way too much time trying to get
it to work when it's often much easier to string cat5 between two NICs.

There is no need for a hub but since both computers are going to be used to
access the Internet for the sake of security it would be wise to connect
both computers to a router. NOTE: if you are on a dial-up connection, most
ISPs don't allow simultaneous connections to the Internet. However, most
broadband services, DSL, cable, etc. do allow it.

Modem - Switch - New XP computers can't see each other although identical
setting were used to setup the network. When using 98se not problem.
XP-they don't see each other.

One has Norton antivirus, the other has PcCillin. Is there setting there
which block?

Greetings --

Usually, WinXP's Networking Wizard makes it simple and painless --
almost entirely automatic, in fact. There's a lot of useful,
easy-to-follow information in WinXP's Help & Support files, and here:

Check the workgroup name. XP and Win98 use different default names for
this.

Disable ICF on the two computers. Firewall is needed only for the Internet source. Are you able to access the shares using the \\IP Address in the RUN box? And yes, the Workgroup names need to be same.
