I have 2 computers that I'm trying to network together.
One runs xp-home, the other xp-professional. I can't seem
to get the two to access each other. The network wizard is
set up correctly, the ip addresses are set up, but neither
one can "see" or access the other. One percular thing
happened though. I used my notebook computer for the first
time to access my school's network. I updated all the
Microsoft patches to get it up to date. Brought it home,
and when it connected it to my home computer, wa-la! the
network worked at my home! After restarting the notebook
computer though, I haven't been able to network since. I
don't know what is wrong. All firewalls have been disabled
and I've even tried changing my ip addresses on both
machines. Can anyone PLEASE help me?

Hi Shannon, Have you tried pinging one computer from the
other. The ping command determines if there is a
Physical/Data Link connection between 2 computers. Go to
Start>All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt. Type at
the C:\> ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx /all (where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
is the IP address of the target PC). If it says there is
a connection then we can move on from there.

You didn't say if the computers were connected via a
router/switch or cabled directly to each other. If cabled
directly you'll need a "cross-over" cable to connect.

I hope this helps, let me know.

I've tried pinging the other computer within the
command prompt. Even tried changing the ip address
manually for each machine. That doesn't work.
The computers both have ethernet network cards and are
connected by means of a crossover cable, there is not a
hub/router/switch. Any other ideas what could be wrong?

Just wanted to let other's know, I have 3 computers, one
98 and two XP's. The two XP's could never 'see' each
other on the network, but once I installed NetBuei AND
NetLink Net BIOS on them, everythink worked OK. You need
the XP CD to install them, and they are located in the
ValueAdd/Net/Netbios directory.
