Right lets see who payed attention in Maths class at school.
Below is a simple sum, lets see who can get the correct answer.
Answers only. No need to show how you worked it out :D

7

Though it should be written like so...

9 - 5 + (5 x 0) + 3 = 7

:D

I make it 11

9 to 5 is 8, (5 nothings are nuffin so you can ignore this bit), + 3 = 11

:)

No, this is simple maths -

1+1 = ?

Yours is complicated maths. :)

V_R, Ian and Crazylegs are correct. V-R poited out a criticalpoint " ( ) ".
To do the equation you need to understand "Order of Operations" - BODMAS

Well, my answer was correct as it didn't show brackets. Post it right for correct answer

Here:

9-5 = 4
+ 5 = 9
x 0 = 9
+ 3 = 12

The brackets are important so me no feel ashamed at 'wrong' answer.

Pah!

Good grief.

The Holy Order of Operations:

  1. terms inside parentheses or brackets
  2. exponents and roots
  3. multiplication and division
  4. addition and subtraction

Here, brackets may be used to avoid confusion, but they are not required as multiplication still has precedence over addition/subtraction.

Well, Flops, you've even managed to get "your" method wrong.

9-5=4
+5=9
x0=0 (not 9)
+3=3

Tee hee, just shows how much we've all forgotten from school days.:D

Maybe I'm a dufus but I still don't get it. To multiply something by zero means you times by nothing hence it doesn't change. I always thought that anyway, have I been getting it wrong all these years then?

My maths teacher always taught me that brackets were important to avoid confusion. And I'm certainly confused now.

So I say again - pah! ;)

Strange to think in '86 or '87 I gained a City & Guilds Part III in Digital Techniques. And no, didn't slip the examiner a back-hander, lol
