Simple macro utility?

OORAH!

In my Apple days, I had a very simple
macromaker. I'd set it to record, enter a string
of text and actions, then stop recording and
assign a two-key sequence to activate it.

Thereafter, if I wished to enter my contact
information, it was Shift-F7 (for example). I
had more than one sig, each with its own key.

Is there still such a thing?

Now download the following 2 files and save them in the directory you
created above.
Download MacroMaker executable
Download MacroMaker help file

My own CoolKeys app (www.paulbowlay.com) can let you type data into the
current window, along with a lot of other cool things (bulk file delete,
bulk file rename, create new folder, etc), in only 89k with no setup.
It may be to your liking. :)

Wow! I'm not sure (yet) that CoolKeys will meet my stated need
(insert prepared text strings into documents), but it does a TON
of other useful tasks. Very nice, low overhead, well thought
out. Those who do not read the manual, however, will find the
first few minutes interesting...

Thanks, Paul

It took a whole 15 minutes to get comfortable with this.

THIS IS A TERRIFIC LITTLE APP. I now have about 10 websites set
up for instant access, plus several text strings, plus a ton of
other actions. Every few minutes for the past hour I've jumped
into that folder to add something else.

One of the more attractive aspects of CoolKeys is that it
occupies nearly zero space. No Registry entries, burns virtually
no memory or disc space; it's a tiny program.

Thanks, Paul!

<<< you said something about 6.0 -- care to let out a few hints?

Wow, thanks for the glowing review! :) You certainly made me very happy.

As for v6.00, it's mainly a bug-fix release (yes, there's a couple, but
very minor and not worth mentioning), plus some updated docs and a new
'info' hotkey (Shift+Control+I to open ReadMe.txt|.doc|etc in a folder to
get quick information about an app -- no need to go scrolling to find the
ReadMe.txt file). Also, some commands (new text file) have presets for
quick creation (Shift+Control+T and then enter '/ae' to create a new
AutoExec.bat file, '/rm' to create ReadMe.txt, etc). Also is the option
to have audio sounds for all items (eg. when deleting files, you can have
just the normal system chime to indicate completion, or use Delete.wav).

I'm sure I'll add more before release. :) I know v5.00 is called 'Final'
in the docs (and app itself) but I changed my mind. :)

Paul.

It's a very mature product, Paul, but you're
definitely permitted to change your mind...
especially if you make the CK window 'active'
when it comes up.

Just installed it on my home computer - and like
CK even more. I simply packed everything into an
email and sent it on ahead.

IT LETS ME REDUCE THE STEPS OF MAKING A NEW FOLDER IN EXPLORER FROM ME
HAVING TO

RIGHT CLICK > NEW > FOLDER > TYPE NAME

TO

shift-ctrl-F > type name

-russellmz bows down in respect-

now for my complaint:
when i try and use it to type my name in a browser text field it beeps
(signaling it is doing something according to TFM) but no text appears
:(

is that normal or just because i use avant browser?

regardless, me loves the new folder option. been looking for somthing
that does that for freaking -YEARS-.

especially if you make the CK window 'active'

Are you saying it doesn't become active for you? Weird. Are you able
to reproduce this every time, or just randomly? Please e-mail me if
you wish -- I'm curious as it works fine for me on all versions of
Windows. Thanks.

I just downloaded Avant Browser, can you give me the problem URL so I can
test this for myself? Thanks Russell.

It's "active", I guess. But the cursor must be
clicked into the text box. If I use alt-z (my
choice for CK activation), the box appears. I
must move the cursor into it, then type pic
tiger to generate a sheet of tigers.

So I type: alt-z, move cursor and click, pic
tiger. I'm so pleased with the amazing
efficiency of this utility that I resent that
middle step!!! Did I miss something?

just tried to do it in: http://www.google.com/

made sure the cursor was blinking in the text field then

shift-ctrl-z > text showed nothing

did not do it when i did my custom one either. the command i got in
the mycommands.ini is: rz = type Russell Zah

hope it helps.

I just tried it with Avant Browser and you're right -- typing doesn't work.
BUT, the typing DOES work with Internet Explorer and most other apps, so it
seems to be a specific problem with just Avant Browser at this stage.

(Technically, the typing is done with normal Win32 keybd_event() calls, so
it should type into ANY window, even Avant Browser. But it may be that a
slight delay [50 ms] is needed prior to typing -- I'll experiment).

UPDATE: I have now fixed this problem for v6.00 of CoolKeys. The problem
was that Avant Browser was not giving the focus back to the original item
after the CoolKeys window hid itself before typing, and thus the keystrokes
were being sent but just not to the text box. :) v6.00 will arrive soon.

cool. you rock dude.

I'm amazed!

My usage of this utility grows and grows, and with it my
efficiency.
A small interface issue appeared on my XPH computer, and Paul
issued a proper fix within hours of my question. It's perfection
now.

Paul has my vote for the Pricelessware Medal of Honor.
