I am looking for a formula that will do the following;
If cell A1 in workbook one = Brent, then cell B1 must equal the amount in
cell A1 of workbook two
 
Hi,

Try this with the file extension changed as required

=IF(A1="Brent",[Book2.xlsx]Sheet1!$A$1,"")

This is the formula I used, (the cell numbers are correct), but it won't
return a value.

I bet that if you retype Brent in A3, you'll see that it retrieves the value in
that external file.

ps. Check to see what's in B3 of Sheet1 of that slowdownchart.xlsx workbook.

pps. Do you have slowdownchart.xlsx open and are you using xl2007?

Mike formula should work, what does the formula return ?

try doing something, have the slowdownchart workbook open, and then in your
workbook enter in one cell = then select the cell you want the result from
and hit enter, if you got the number with this, highlight the formula, do
copy, go to Mike's formula and replace just the part within the first and 2nd
comma with this

That means you don't have a file by that name--excel is asking you to locate
that file so that it can use it, too.


When I copy the formula, and press Enter, it brings up the Look in box and

Yes, and you don't even need Sum. Just use:

=[Book2.xlsx]Sheet1!A1

Adjust the range to suit.

For some reason, this is not working on my system. Is something turned off?
Even if I open two new Excel books, I cannot grab the sum of a cell on the

Open both the receiving file and the sending file in the same instance of excel.

Select the cell in the sending file
Edit|copy (or ctrl-c)

Select the cell in the receiving file
Edit|paste special|paste link

You'll end up with a formula that has the correct syntax.

Once you get that portion working, you'll be able to add the =if() portion.

Or you'll be able to describe what problem happens next.
For some reason, this is not working on my system. Is something turned off?
