Simple Floppy Problem (I think)

Hi,
I have had floppy problems with my 4 year old M/B in the past (super
micro P6SBA) and have been using an LS120 on primary slave OK for
several years.
I recently had a HD problem and bought a new 80GB yesterday.
I wanted to get back to a basic floppy only and decided to remove the
LS120 however but I cannot seem to get the floppy to work.
What I have done so far:
I removed LS120 physically, and set Primary Slave to Auto in BIOS,
checked "not detected" OK.
Connected floppy, set up in BIOS OK and made sure Floppy controller was
enabled.
Run W98 and everything looks OK
Looked in "My computer" and "A" is there but when I try to look at a
disk, it lights up, runs but W98 freezes.
Tried 3 different leads and 2 floppy drives but all exhibit the same
symptoms!
Tried it in DOS and it said it cannot read data.
As it is years since I played around with H/W and settings, it may well
still be me that's me at fault!
Any advice as to what might be wrong further checks I could do?
Thanks

The twisted cable needs to be at floppy side when plugged in. Is the cable
hooked up right? Pin1?

Yep and I did try and put it round the other way as one of my cables had
no alignment spigot.
