If you were building a simple file server for 1 or 2 users, would you
use XP Pro or Windows 2000 Server? (it will not need to host AD, as
this is on another box)

Thank you,
Brett.

Thank you,
Brett.

You can make your own decision: -
A "server" gives you the following extra functionality:

- Central account & password administration & validation.
- Centralised logon process (script, policy).
- More than 10 concurrent connections.

Plus a few others that are probably not relevant in your case.

If it's just sharing you're after then Win2000 Professional
or WinXP Professional will do.

W2K Server. But you leave out all the variables that would influence
my decision, such as "Can you afford the OS?"

Thanks Jeff & Pegasus.

So Win2K Server would provide better file sharing performance than XP
Pro, even for 2-3 users?

Thanks,
Brett

Not at all. You will not notice any difference in performance
for this size of network. However, you will notice a big
difference in the balance of your bank account.
