Simple add-ons

I am new to XP (XP Pro actually) having used Win98SE for years.
There are two features that seem to be absent in XP that were either
avaialable in 98 or in applications that won't run on XP. Can anybody
suggest simple add-ons (freeware if possible) that will:

(1) Provide a copy facility directly from scanner to printer.
(2) Provide for the microphone input to go directly to the speakers (i.e.
using the PC as an amplifier)

TIA
Chris

Neither Windows 98 nor XP has such a facility. However, most scanners come
with software that incudes such capability. What scanner are you using?

Sorry, I know nothing about that.

HP Scanjet 4100C (which is quite old). It did indeed come with such
software which runs on 98 but not XP. Cannot find any update on HP's
website - after all it is a bit old!

That's a common problem with older peripherals (particularly scanners) and
newer operating systems. The software support isn't there.

You could look around for some third-party utility that might do what you
want, but my guess is that you won't find anything. You are probably stuck
with doing this as a two-step process--scan and save in some printable
graphics file type, then print it.

Alternatively, you might want to invest in a more modern scanner. There are
some excellent choices that are very inexpensive.

I know what you mean about older programs getting along with Windows XP. I
have great need for Parsons Address Book on my Windows XP box. What works
for it may work for you;

Start
Help

search for "compatibility mode" and it will come up with the instructions to
have programs run as the Windows version at the time of the programs
release. For me, P.A.B. was to run it in a Windows 98 mode.

Provide a copy facility directly from scanner to printer.

Are you sure this isn't part of the software that came with your
scanner?

If it's not, I'll bet a little googling would find a free or low-cost
third-party program.

Get Irfanview, free at http://www.irfanview.net/ .

Then things are easy, with no need to store the image:

1. Open Irfanview.
2. Ctrl-Shift-A to acquire image.
3. Ctrl-P to print.
4. Alt-F4 to close.

(Steps 2-3 can be repeated multiple times for multiple images/)

Thanks, Stan. I'm an Irfanview user, but never had any need to use such a
feature, so I wasn't aware of it.

Not quite as simple as doing it directly in my scanner software (a few more
keystrokes or mouse clicks), but almost. It does the two step process I
suggested above within a single program, so it's much easier.

Thanks again.

Any multi-function Printer (i.e. Print, Scan, Copy, and perhaps Fax). For
instance, I have an Canon MP830 which does exactly that. I am assuming that
you meant that the scanned image was processed directly to the printer and
never loaded to the PC. If so, I doubt that capability ever exsisted In any
version of Windows. Also I suspect that any scanner is, in fact, routing the
image through the PC to the Printer. To do otherwise, would require
connecting the scanner and printer directly via a USB or Firewire or network
or some other cable and providing some built in firmware in each machine to
accomplish the task. Not something that most have a need to accomplish.
As to the second problem, IF the PC is being used as an amplifier then the
sound is NOT connecting to the speakers directly. The computer is providing
the amplification and the volume control to each speaker.

Happy to help!

BTW, I was most impressed a couple of months ago with the support for
Irfanview. I reported a bug in the command-line interface, and the
program author responded within 24 hours with a new executable that
fixed the bug. I've been a paid user for some time, but even so I
found this impressive.

I try to give the same level of service to my own registered users,
and it's nice to see someone else with the same philosophy.

Thanks Stan, Ken and Don for your suggestions.
Irfanview is an avenue that I had not considered.
I have found a freeware program (iCarbon) that seems to work for most
situations that I need.
Thanks for the compatability mode idea too. Unfortunately it is the
installer that is detecting the OS and, as yet, I have not got it to play
ball!

anyway, many thanks to you both.

Yeh - all that is obvious.
