I have a similar issue to rocknroll's post from 3-9. We purchased a cheaper
computer for our 5 year old son that included XP Home edition. He somehow
got into the controll pannel and assigned a password to the XP Welcome screen
and has no idea what he entered in there. I am trying to get by the password
screen.

I have tried to get to the safe mode but for some reason the F8 key does not
work during the boot sequence. I have tried to restore the machine to a
previous date but the F11 key does not work. I had to replace the standard
connection keyboard with a USB keyboard because there is an issue with the
standard keyboard port.

This machine has very little data on it and I would be willing to reinstall
all the programs in order to get by the welcome screen. Any help would be
appreciated.

You have to fix the issue with the keyboard. If you are using a usb
keyboard, then you've probably got one with the stupid F-Lock function.
Toggle off the F-Lock function and you'll be able to use F8 to get into
Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, you will see the normally hidden Administrator
account. The default password is a blank. Then go to the User Accounts
applet in Control Panel and set passwords that you will remember and
make other desired changes.
