You would use it to connect an external SATA drive.

And as for your second question, yes while you still have the zip file you will have 2 gig. When you extract the contents you are only extracting a copy of the contents, not the actual contents....

Thanks MadX....i will investigate further into e-ata drives.
I have a stack of zip files i'm gonna get rid of

Thanks again.

esata sucks!

why? because it is not meant to be hot pluggable I hate esata for that reason.

I can plug and unplug my esata drive without any problems.

Hi AB,

Thanks for the link. I has spurred on a stack of questions for me. If i read it properly, i think esata is just another type of connection, only its faster than USB and Firewire and can handle large amounts of data transfer.....i will have to dig a bit deeper. Is any external HD a potential e-sata i wonder. Also i will need a cable for experimenting.
Can you give me any pointers as to how i find out if this port i have discovered is functional or is just a dead port??
Any help would be great.

You will need to refer to your manual or spec sheet to see if it is a workable e-sata port. If it looks like one themn I'm guessing it should work.
External drive come with various conections, look for one that specifies it has e-sata, preferably e-sata 2 but e-sata 1 is stil pretty fast. My external came with a cable and is e-sata 1. I also bought a e-sata card for one of the pc's it only cost £3 of e-bay.
There is no great mystery it is just a different type of connector is all.

There is a setting in your bios that is set to ACPI
that is what is required I believe but that has to be done before installing windows mine is set up as SATA that is probably why

I didn't think it was worth the hassle

Dear folks,

sorry I need to bring up this thread. There have been many changes and misconceptions since 2009.

1) There is a new port now call eSATAp (eSATA/USB)

2) It is different as compared to the original eSATA found in Seagate FreeAgent, Ranger, Nexstar Vantec.
It can NOW be self powered without external power source.
On a desktop, you can even self power a 3.5" HDD due to the 12v power supply.
Please ensure your HDD/SSD drive supports eSATAp.

3) eSATAp port is backward compatible with USB 2
eSATAp & eSATA CAN be HOT PLUG & HOTSWAP with a Freeware call HotSwap!

4) Implementing eSATAp now SIMPLY requires a Delock desktop bracket.
ZERO drivers, NO need for BIOS AHCI tweak or OS registry tweak.
Thus eSATAp can be implemented on MAC, Linux and PC.

5) eSATAp is NOW found in almost 40% of the notebooks out there.
HP, Toshiba, Sony, Lenovo, Acer, Dell, etc.

6) Note that if you want to connect to NAS box with RAID & eSATA port.
You will need a PCI-Express eSATAp card with Port multiplier

7) According to various reviews. eSATAp is STILL faster than USB 3.
This is due to minimal translation and overheads as ultimately it goes to SATA.
