Silently Record Line In & Playback MP3 Simultaneously

Hi all,

Might be a better group for this - if so let me know.

I would like to be able to silently record sound via a line in, and
listen to MP3s simultaneously using the same soundcard.

I can currently only achieve one of two scenarios:
1. Hear both the recorded sounds (via the line in) and the MP3.
2. Mute the speaker, and hear nothing.

Is it possible to somehow tell my computer to silently record from my
line in?

Details:
Recording using Atropos-SB
Computer is a Dell Optiplex GX620 - recording using the standard
in-built card.
Windows XP Professional - I may not have admin rights, but I can always
have IT implement any suggestions you may have (it's a work PC).

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

Your soundcard cannot be set to Line In and playback as you want, but........
You can do this if you install more than one soundcard. See below:
