Silent Modem

I used to hear the modem squawk when it was dialling out.
Now for no apparent reason it is silent although dials
ok. Is there a way to get the sound back as it was quite
a useful signal? Thanks, Graham

Control Panel|PHONE & MODEMS
MODEMS tab|PROPERTIES|MODEM tab...
See if the speaker volume is turned up.

If that's okay, click the ADVANCED tab...
In the Extra Settings box type M1L2

Click on OK to exit the dialog.

Many thanks. Volume was already up full but the M1L2
command did the trick. Modem speaker now audible. The
mystery is how did it get changed? Could a virus or a
rogue program have downloaded a dialer and deliberately
switched off the speaker so I couldn't hear it dialling
out?

Could be caused by a glitch on the power line -- are you protected by a
line conditioner or a UPS with a built-in line conditioner?

Could be caused by a spike on the phone line -- do you have a surge
protector on the phone line?

Could be caused by static -- do you have a humidifier?

Could be caused by bad software -- do you have a filter for M$ code?

Thanks Bob. There's a surge protector on the mains supply
but not on the telephone line so I'll get one fitted
although I suspect the change was caused by software. I
would be interested to know where I can get the code
filter you mentioned. Thanks, Graham

Telco typically installs a surge protector on phone line -
for free. One that actually does something due to a less than
10 foot connection to the building's single point earth
ground. If a plug-in protector is adjacent to that computer,
then that plug-in protector can even connect AC electric
transients into a powered off computer. Why? No short
connection to earth ground.

If spikes were changing modem configuration, then the
configuration would have been completely erased (contaminated
by random ones and zeroes). Most likely reason for change is
software - either another program changed the configuration or
somehow a human caused default settings to be loaded.
Transients are so far down the list of possible reasons that
is should not even have been mentioned.

Thanks dev the M1L2 worked for me i have modem sound back.I believe it was a rogue dialer that cut out my conection and the modem sound
