Hi
I wonder if anyone can help with this ?
I have Windows XP Home edition installed on a AMD Athlon 1G machine
M/B is ECS K7VZA with the latest BIOS installed
Memory is 640 Mb - video NVIDIA GeoForce2 MX 200
I have 2 hard drives 1 DVD and 1 CDRW and a generic 6 port USB hub
The M/B comes with onboard sound which is VIA AC'97 Audio Controller WDM and I have installed a Creative SB Live! in an attempt to solve the problem I will describe below: -
Previously I had all sorts of problems with the computer randomly freezing - I have sinced traced this (I think) as it occured only after Windows XP updates, I believed it was the BIOS as this had always shown ACPI errors in the system log. A recent BIOS upgrade has improved this (as well as taking off all the Microsoft XP upgrades)
Prior to this BIOS upgrade the sound suddenly stopped working - this happened during an install of Half Life which aroused my suspicions.
I have since re-installed the latest and greatest drivers checked the BIOS to make sure the onboard audio was enabled. I gave up and bought a new soundcard and disabled the onboard sound - but the same problem occurs. Drilling down through the device manager I finally found this message for all the audio and midi etc. drivers
Driver enabled but not started
This alerted me to the BIOS setup but it seems fine - the speakers seem fine and work on other systems.
Does any one out there have any ideas that I can pursue from now on?
