I 'm using several PCs with Win2000 over RAID 1 (mirror) with an add on sil0680 PCI controller. The disks are 40GB or 80GB IDE. As these disks are hard to find (impassible is more appropriate) I 've tried with disks of 160GB capacity. But the set dropps the secondary master. Allways. The disks are brand new, I 've oppened the seal myself. And I have tried two different sets. Fresh installation has the same result. Looks like the controller or Windows cannot handle such a disk.

M/B: Albatron PX865PE Lite Pro /BIOS R1.11
CPU: Intel Pentium4 2.8GHz
Ram: Kingston 512 DDR
RAID Controller: Sil0680/ BIOS 3.2.10
Disks: Western Digital 160GB

I know it is an outdated system, but it hosts a specific custom application.

Any ideas?

You are using same size disks for the RAID 1 setup?

If the problem's consistent, suspect the controller.

They don't cost a lot and the Adaptec ones are very good.

Yes the disks are the same. My first thought was the controller, but then I tried a different PC with a different controller with another pair of disks. Same problem.

Plenty for sale at Amazon and they deliver to Greece.

So let's get this clear.

Different PC's, different controllers, different disks - correct?

And the fault still the same.

There doesn't seem to be a common denominator so to be quite honest I'm stumped.

Unless you were using common disks from the same source in all cases, in which case suspect the disks.

Yes, correct. Different PC's, different controllers, different disks. And the supplier is the same, as my company has a policy on the supplies. But I don't think that it is the disks, as hardware I mean, because I 've tested them as single and there was no problem. I 've also tried to install WinXP but the installation failed with a glamorus "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL". So my suspicions are blaming the controller not being able to handle such a capacity of disks. I 've tested on 80GB disks and there was no problem

Found that on the first page of Sil site. So must be some other problem.

Yes, I have seen it too. I 've read lots of datasheets these days, but I still have no clue of what kind of problem can it be.

P.S.
Sorry if I make any syntax or any other kind of grammar errors.
