Significance of Site Licensing server

Hi,

We are trying to build a new site for our Active Directory structure. The
Active Directory is Windows 2000 server based and it was migrated from
Windows NT.
I notice in the First Default Site under Active Directory Site and Services,
the site licensing server still points to the old NT PDC.

With the new site we recently build, we don't have any entry on the site
licensing server.

What is the significance of the Site Licensing server? Is it a separate
license from CAL? I want to remove the old NT PDC from the site licensing
server entry of the First Default Site, but don't know what is the
implication if I do that? Anyone can shed some light? Thank you.

You get the first automatically (on the first DC.)

You 'should' have at least one License Server (not necessaryly a DC)
per site.

It is a collection point for license information used by those
services which are contructed to check it -- such services may
not function correctly if the Site Licensing server is unavailable.

Thank you for your reply. Do I need to purchase additional license for the
licensing server? Especially when I try to do the following:
1. replacing licensing server from the old PDC to the new domain controller
2. creating a new site and assigning the site's DC a licensing server

No, the licenses are for the clients (or particular services/per client)
for those services which use the Site License Server.

The Site License Server itself is free (you paid for it with Win2000+
server).

Why do you want to "replace" the current one?

You need at least one per site if you need them at all.

It does not have to be a DC.

You really should have read my previous message better.

Thanks Herb.

The reason I want to replace the old PDC as the licensing server is because
it's running on an old machine, which I believe is going to die very soon.
But you answer my important question: is the license free?
