Signature option in Thunderbird news

There is a box to check if one wants a signature line added to posts. I
check the box and enter the desired signature. This has no effect. My
posts are still unsigned unless I manually do so each time and when I go
back in to that option box, the signature I entered is missing. How do
I make it work correctly?

You are pointing to a file and not just typing in a signature, right?
