I installed Vista 64 Ultimate on my PC about a month ago.
Drivers were installed from the CD that came with the Intel D975Xbx2.
Everything was just fine.
A few days ago I checked Windows Updates and found "SigmaTel - Sound -
SigmaTel High Definition CODEC" driver that was recommended (Publisher
3/21/2007).
Naturally I thought "Well a WHQL drivers should work no problems... after
all they were "tested""
Install of the driver never finished and came up with some kind of error
that MS is unaware of. (imagine that!)
After rebooting my Sound was gone!
The driver in the Device Manager was showing up as working, but that was it.
Roll Back was of course conveniently missing.
Restore point didn't fix anything either.
Getting the latest drivers from Intel or even reinstalling ones that worked
from the CD was useless.
I was about to give up this and live without a sound (After all this is a
work's PC., but then I decided to try again.
I uninstalled the devide in device manager and then went to
ProgramFiles(x86) folder and instead of deleting anythign that said SigmaTel
I renamed them.
Only after that I was able to successfully install the drivers I downloaded
from Intel.
The moral of this story is tht you shouldnt trust "WHQL" bologna. It's
actually not the first time I had my systems down because of it. Had to
completely WinXP a few times thanks to it.

You have to uninstall previous Sigmatel drivers before installing new ones.
This is fairly common with drivers of any sort. Driver updates are always
optional - only do so if you're having an actual problem. It has nothing to
do with WHQL.
