The configuration software that came with the joystick isn't compatable with
WinXP. The stick shows up in the controller configuration but it won't work
in any games without being able to program the buttons.

Does anyone know a way around this so I can keep using my joystick?

Thanks.

Yes, just plug it in, then go into Control Panel/Game Controllers and select
Add. In the list, select Microsoft SideWinder (Auto Detect) and Windows XP
will install the proper drivers for you. You can no longer create
"profiles" but you can do that from within the games which support such a
function.

Thanks for the info Chris. Do you know if Microsoft ever released a patched
version of the profile software that works in XP with the older controllers?

No, Microsoft hasn't and probably never will. The reason is the old
software was written in a .vxd format (or something like that - it has been
years), and the format isn't supported in Windows XP. Most game controllers
went to USB several years ago, even prior to XP, so the support moved to
that.
