Sidewinder "not connected" all of a sudden

I've been playing with my sidewinder Precision 2 for a couple of months, then
last friday it just wasn't working. I checked the control panel and it had
disappeared from the game controllers menu as well. I tried plugging it into
a different port, and then it recognized it, and it was once again visible
game controllers only now it showed as "not connected" under status. I found
lots of stuff in the knowledge base about "not connected" issues. Tried just
about everything without results. The only thing I have not tried is
modifying the regitry. This whole issue might be understandable if it never
worked, but to work one moment and not another is very unusual. When I plug
it in it does say "found new hardware" and it does say "ready to use" .
Under device manager it displays as "working properly". Does anyone have any
advice for me?

Thanks,

mp

Hi mp,

Please try to test your Sidewinder on another system to see
if it's the device itself which is causing this new issue.

Also, there are some capacitors in USB devices that on some devices will get
to a fully charged state and not discharge normally. The result is behavior
such as you are reporting. You can try unplugging the USB connector and
temporarily shorting the contacts with a paperclip or something. Then plug
in the device and try again. You can also just unplug the device for a while
and let the capacitors discharge themselves.
