Is there anyway to make this joystick work in XP. I am using it with a USB
input adapter. It worked fine with 98

"Try this: go into Settings/ Control Panel in the Start menu. Select Game
Controllers from the list (If you can't see Game Controllers in the list
select "Switch to Classic View" at the top left of the screen then select
Game Controllers from the list). Select Add in the dialogue box which
appears. From the list that appears select Microsoft Sidewinder
(auto-detect). Click OK and exit your way back out. After doing all this,
sure enough my computer has detected my Sidewinder Pro Force Feedback
joystick. Unfortunately, I haven't yet re-installed any programs which use
it yet so I don't know how well it works.

The impression I get is that the only driver compatible with XP we will get
for this joystick is the one that comes with XP. Hope this is of some help
to you."

Thank You, I tried that and get an error message that my "gameport or
gameport drivers are not properly configured". I doesn't even detect it as
new hardware. Any other ideas.

You could try one of the other 38,999 hits in Google.

Did the USB adaptor come with the joystick, or is it a 3rd-party one? If
it's a 3rd-party one try their website for a driver or solution.

If you plug the stick in, does anything new show in Game Controllers, such
as Generic 4-Axis Joystick? If so, you can customize it to fit your needs.

Gameport support was discontinued with Windows 9x. Windows XP gets
only the "left-over" drivers ported from that version and usability is
extreme "lacking." Since you are adding a USB to Gameport adapter and
if this adapter does not come with its own drivers, you are out of
luck. Force Feedback drivers only really exist is the game itself
have them.

Force feedback joysticks NEED two way communications with the computer.
The game port circuitry that was originally intended for game
controllers (four analog axis and four button circuits) isn't suited for
output (the force feedback signals), thus game port force feedback
controllers typically use the game port's more flexible digital MIDI
circuitry (which was designed for bidirectional communications) for
input AND output.

Unfortunately the TYPICAL adapters for using game port controllers on a
USB port only support the game port's joystick functions (the four
analog axis and four button circuits). Some controllers labeled
"Digital" (including some Microsoft models) came with atypical adapters
that were capable of using the MIDI circuits.

IF Windows XP includes drivers for a Microsoft Force Feedback joystick
and doesn't automatically detect the joystick when the adapter is
plugged into the computer (connect the adapter to the joystick before
connecting it to the computer) it might be necessary to use a listing
specifically specifying the USB connection when using the wizard for
adding a game controller. IF some third party adapter WITH MIDI
CAPABILITY is used with a Microsoft "digital" joystick it would be
listed in the game controller and/or device manager as the third party
adapter or a generic interface device (possibly with "HID" in the listing).
