I have assembled a new computer where I have installed a
Sidewinder FF2 joystick. As I had read somewhere that the
drivers supplied with the joystick would not work under
XP, I accepted the drivers installed by XP. There is
however a problem with the force changing during the use
of the joystick. This problem is known to Microsoft and
reported in article 321127.
However in article 302607 it is explained how the patch
for the VIA chipset should be installed. As I have a VIA
chipset, my questions are:

a) Can I install the patch for the VIA chipset with the XP
drivers installed?

b) Should I install the drivers I received with the
joystick and then install the patch?

I hope someone can help.

Best Regards,

The drivers for the device are already in the OS. They are newer than the
drivers on the CD, and Digitally signed. If you have changed the default
handleing of Unsigned drivers then installing the disk will give you older
drivers. So...

a) Yes

b) If you want use of the keymapping software for the device then Yes. If
you are still setup to use Signed drivers when present instead of unsigned
drivers you will be fine installing the CD. It will just add the keymapping
software and ignore the unsigned driver.

If that doesn't help let me know.

You will have to reinstall the software that came with the device. It is
what contains the custom property sheet for the Gaming Options control panel
that allows you to do the Keymapping and force manipulation. Lets try the
following:

1. Right Click "My Computer" and choose "Properties".
2. Click the Hardware tab.
3. In the "Device Manager" section click "Driver Signing".
4. Check to see that under the "What action do you want Windows to take?"
section it is not set to "Ignore..."
5. If it is not set to "Ignore.." then it is OK to run the Sidewinder Setup
CD. It will add unsigned drivers to your system but shouldn't use them as
there are better Signed drivers present. This will give you back the
Property sheet in Gaming Options that allows for force manipulation.

Let me know if this doesn't work.

Thank you. I will try this and then I will let you know
the result.

Best Regards,

Domingos
