I just got a new MB without a gameport and wanted to use
my old Sidewinder 3Dpro stick. I found a Belkin adaptor
said disign for sidewinder controler, but when I plug it
in my system XP does not see it. Has any one get this to
work? The adaptor is a Belkin F3U200-08INCH.

Hi Vu,

To install your controller, Plug it in, click Start / Control Panel /
Switch to Classic view if you haven't already / click Game Controllers
Click Add... / Select Microsoft Sidewinder Auto Detect / OK / OK.

This is a little more difficult, Jimmy. No game port available. He's
trying to use a Belkin adapter, so we're dealing with Belkin software and a
conversion. I think it is an issue for Belkin support, or perhaps (if it is
USB) determining whether the system is running USB 2.0 or not with 1.x
version Belkin hardware. 8-)

Thanks Chris! :-) I thought that it was simply a Gameport to USB
adapter that needed to be set to autodetect first in order to work.

Of course, it makes more sense to sell or donate the old stick and
buy a recent model USB joystick instead. Xmas is coming soon... ;-)

OK you want to know why it's not working..... any device that connects to a
USB port MUST have hard coded data written in to the device to tell the USB
port excactly what it is. The problem is that the Sidewinder 3D does not
have this data and therefore the poor USB port has absolutely no idea what
it trying to connect to it... result... no connection.

Sorry, no way around it.... except to either:

Purchase a separate soundcard with gameport controller on it, connect the 3D
to the gameport and use the instructions Jimmy provided to install XP's
built in drivers
or
Purchase a new USB joystick.

Thank you both Jimmy and Chrish. I think I will take on
Jimmy advise and get a new USB controler.

They really are much more simple. The game port devices are going by the
wayside, as evidenced by your new computer without a game port built into
it. The USB devices are better, quicker and much easier to install, too.
Happy gaming!
