Is the microsoft sidewinder 3D pro compatible with windows
XP? It appears in the web pages that I've looked at that
only Windows 95 and 98 support it. How can this be? Why
wouldn't an new version like xp support your hardware?

If that is the game port version, go to Control Panel/Game Controllers with
it plugged in and Add it under Microsoft SideWinder (Auto Detect). You no
longer can install the old .vxd format software because THAT isn't
supported. You also need to rely on in-game Options to program the buttons,
etc., but the controllers work fine.

I could not get mine to work with the game port but they supplied me with a
usb adaptor, works perfectly, no drivers either

yup, I had win 98 first and the game port worked fine but needed to install
drivers from the disk . U/G to XP I tried the game port without success,
then attached the usb adaptor and plugged it in. picked it up fine no
drivers to install it was just plug and play. no problems ever since

Dave.
Can you tell me more about the USB ator and where can I
buy it?
Jaco

Mine came with the sidewinder along with the motocross madness game. I don`t
know where you can buy it but I`ll dig out the documentation and let you
have a copy. If I'm not mistaken I'm sure you will be able to buy it at PC
world or similar but I'll check for you.
post it ASAP

To answer the original question:

I have been using an MS Sidewinder 3D Pro for years, and XP Pro picked it up
fine
when I chose "add" in the game controller after installing XP. Could be your
gameport, rather than the joystick itself. I'm using an SB Live! value and the
Sidewinder is on that gameport.
XP installed the 'drivers' without even asking for a cd as soon as it detected
it.
So, yes, XP does support the Sidewinder 3D Pro directly :)

I have news for you people the SideWinder 3D Pro is not compatible with Windows Xp Home edition. Maybe with the XP Pro but not with the XP Home addition. I have the Xp Home edition with PLUS and spent hours trying all sources but it still would not work . I have not heard of the adapter that Dave mentioned but it WILL NOT work as it comes out of the box with the standard Game Port Plug and Play connector. Maybe with a USB adapter it will but not with the connector that came with it originally. I got tired of fiddling with mine so I went to WAL-MART today and bought a LOGITECH EXTREME 3D PRO joystick, plugged it in and it works perfect. Not only that but as far as I am concerned it is far and away Heads above the Microsoft SideWinder with more features and at $27 dollars half the price that I paid for my Sidewinder originally. Lastly this adapter, that Dave mentioned, I have yet to find it on Microsoft's website. I have not seen it mentioned by Microsoft and as a matter of fact had not even heard of it until Dave mentioned it.

Trying to navigate Microsoft's website is tantamount to trying to wrestle with a Bear. They keep you "Going Around the Horn" so to speak. Too bad, being the largest corporation of it's kind in America, they don't have a toll free tech support phone line like the computer companies have. Then again with all the problems people are having with their products they would probably go bankrupt in short order due to their phone bill. LOL. Happy Holidays to all.
