I wonder why the sidebar has a black smudgy bar/border down the rh
side? It's there on other published screenshots so it's not just me.

Microsoft's idea of a joke?

I don't know ... I think they were wanting to have some sort of UI clue that
a sidebar is there, but yet they didn't want the sidebar to seem like it was
taking up a huge chunk of the screen.

So, we get this half-sidebar "fade" into the desktop.

Personally, I think it looks terrible.

Maybe it depends on your wallpaper but on mine it looks cool.
