Shutting IE6 causes PC to lock up

I'm running IE6 on Windows 98.

For the last few months most of the times (about 3 in 4) when I finish using
IE6 and close the last window then I find my PC is completely locked up and
will not allow me to do anything. So all I can do is either press
Ctrl-Alt-Del or switch it off.

Has anyone got any ideas what is causing this? Has something got corrupted
and if so what can I do to fix it?

Thanks for you help.

Hi,
It's likely that another program is causing this- possibly legitimate-
possibly malware (adware, spyware, hijacker, etc.)

Go to Internet Options> Advanced> uncheck "Enable third-party browser
extensions." Restart. That will tell you
if a browser extension is causing the problem. You will still have to find
the troublesome program, add-on, etc. You should re-enable browser
extensions- some are good. ;-)

Disable (for diagnostic purposes) programs such as pop-up blockers,
security, toolbars and other add-ons for IE, anti-virus, etc. Take a look at
any program that might be interfering with IE. You may have to reconfigure,
reinstall, or not reinstall, a program.

ToolbarCop from http://windowsxp.mvps.org/toolbarcop.htm may find an add-on,
BHO or context menu item you've overlooked.

If not caused by a legitimate program, you should conduct a thorough search
for malware.
