I recently installed Win XPpro and I am trouble shutting
down my computer. I go to the start menu and hit shut
down, it seems to work fine. I get a message saying
windows is logging off.
Next comes another message saying, windows is shutting
down.It still seems to be working fine. The computer
seems to be shuttingdown but than another messages pops
up on the monitor saying ...it is now safe to shut down
my computer.

There's good information here:
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm

ok...it takes longer to shutdown....longer then startup.
this is normal and other people (including myself) have
seen this...when the 'turn computer off' appears just
turn off the desktop monitor/speakers or close/secure
laptop/notebook. if you press the power switch the
computer will probably restart.

Is your system capable of automatic shutdown? If yes, is it APM, ACPI or?
If APM, look in Control Panel> Power Options. If you have an APM tab, check
the box on that page to enable power management features (which includes
the automatic off).
