Shutting Down XP Without a Mouse

Yesterday, my mouse became accidentally unplugged, and when I plugged it back
into the computers, it still didn't work. I ended up holding in the power
button to kill the computer and then restarting it, and then the mouse was
fine. I was wondering if there was some other way I could have handled
this...

Most (if not all) Windows tasks and screens can be navigated with only the
keyboard. To shut down your computer without a mouse, press the Ctrl key and
the Esc key at the same time (usually written as "CTRL+ESC). When the start
menu pops up, notice that some of the items in the menu have an underlined
letter. By pressing the corresponding key, that command will be executed,
which in this case would be a "U" (no quotation marks) found in Turn Off.
Then press the "U" again when you have a choice between "Restart",
"Hibernate" and "Turn Off".

Try it and see if it works for you...

Ctrl+Alt+Del, and then simply Tab to the Shutdown and press <Enter>.

Thanks guys, I played with the keyboard all night long trying out the
underlined letters on different screens to see how they work. I wrote down
the shut off sequences so I have them handy.

....and THANK YOU for writing back! I needed to resolve a problem as part of
a class assignment for a course I am taking (CCC-Platte), but nobody was
replying if any posts I made had helped or not, and the end of semester is
rapidly approaching.

I don't want to. The point I'm making is you don't know the OPs
configuration so your response may not work.
Bowfins response works.

Another option for shutting down XP without a mouse is by pressing the
keys - Alt + F4. This brings up the shutdown window. Use the arrow or the
Tab key to select the "shutdown option"

Depending on where the system caratis at that time, you may have to
press ESC first; then alt f4 will work.

How to turn off a XP computer without a mouse?

VERY simply...

1). Press the WinKey to bring up the Start Menu.

2). Use the "up" cursor key to select the shutdown option (first on the list from the
bottom of the Start Menu).

3). Press ENTER to select Shutdown to bring up the shutdown options dialog box (the
one that fades out the rest of the desktop).

4). Use the "Tab" key to cycle the "focus "through the three option buttons (Stand
By, Turn Off, Restart).

By pressing the "Tab" button, you will see a subtle "highlight" cycle through the
buttons on the Shutdown Options dialog - whichever button the highlight is on will be
the one activated when you hit the ENTER key.

5). Hit ENTER when the highlight is on the selection you want.

ALTERNATIVELY:

Open the "Run box" on the Start Menu (WinKey+R) or a Command Prompt and type in :

Shutdown /s /t 0

(the "0" here is a ZERO)

....and press [ok] or hit ENTER

I have to admit that just "hit the win key, then the u key, then u again" is
brilliant, and much easier than the way I explained.

However, in my defence of the method I outlined, if you learnt it, then you would be
able to do almost anything using the keyboard, by a combination of the cursor (arrow)
keys and the tab key...

Unless the motherboard's manufacturer has provided a Windows-based
utility for that purpose, and you've installed it, no.
