Shutting down and Standby problems

Almost every time I want to either shutdown Windows XP
Home, or put it in standby mode, I have to do the command
twice. Nothing happens on the first attempt. Any ideas
would be greatly appreciated.
 
How much time are you allowing for it to go into standby or shutdown. Windows
needs time to shutdown all programs. Perhaps you have one program not shutting
down correctly. If so you'll have to do a trial an error routine to find it.
IE before shutting down or going into standby shut down background programs
manually until the machine shuts down on the first try.
