I have installed a few more progs to my laptop running XP Home. The laptop
starts the same but I am sure it is taking longer to shutdown. Also on
Start up as the taskbar launches where the clock and quicklaunch is going to
be The panel is blue for a moment then they appear. When I click on Control
Panel the inside of the window shows my background for a moment and then
fills in with the icons etc. Any ideas, this has only started happening
after I've installed some Progs and also set up connection for email etc
including AV and ZoneAlarm.

You're launching/activating too many programs at boot time. To make your PC run leaner and meaner, do this:
Start/Run/type MSCONFIG and press Enter. Click the startup tab and uncheck/disable everything except your anti-virus program, if Norton, it will start with NAV. Click Apply/OK, now reboot.
Disabling programs at startup does not delete them, only stops them from activating and using up precious resources.
