By default Windows XP shuts down the computer when a system error occurs.
Check the logs in Event Viewer (Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event
Viewer) to see if any error is logged at the time of the shutdown.

You can also change the default action so that XP doesn't shut down the
computer when an error occurs. To do this, right click on the My Computer
icon and select Properties. Go to the Advanced tab and click Settings
under Startup and Recovery. Under System failure remove the check from
"Automatically restart" and click OK. Apply your changes and OK out of
System Properties.
