Shutdown/Restart Problems

I'm running a home built computer with Windows XP Home,
an Athlon 1.4 processor with 512 megs of ram. Almost
since I first built this machine I have had problems
getting it to Shut Down and Restart properly. Going
through the Start Menu or Ctrl-Alt-Del does no good, the
computer just sits there after I tell it to Shut Down or
Restart. The power and automatic restart buttons on the
case work fine, but trying to go through XP to shut it
down rarely works. This is awfully frustrating, because I
tend to lose a lot of information saved in various
programs since they aren't saved routinely by the
computer. Any help is of course greatly appreciated.

Wim has already replied with the URL to a very good shutdown
troubleshooting site. Just wanted to add that unless you are using
hibernate, you should be saving your work before shutting down or
restarting. That is function of each individual program (not the operating
system) and unless a program utilizes AutoSave options is best done
manually by the user.
