Shutdown Problems

Dear All,

I have serious problems shutting down my Windows XP Home pc with Service
Pack 2.

After I use my broadband provider AOL to connect to the internet, very often
I cannot shut down the pc the normal way. I have to switch the user and it
advises me that there are 2 programs currently running (though the task
manager doesn't give me much help at identifying what they are (even looking
at the resources tab). AOL have provided me with a fix and installed the file
without much luck.

I then can use the shut down pc at this point and it works here. What is the
difference between the 2 forms of shutdown and how to fix it so I can shut
down in the normal way.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi,

Before trying to shutdown, hit ctrl+shift+escape and kill some (4-5) of the
running processes in addition to anything on the applications tab. Then try
shutting down. If it works, then the problem is one of the ones you killed.
If not, repeat the process and kill a few more. Continue until you can
isolate which one of the processes is the problem. Then post back with this
information so we can remove the cause at the root.

Rick,

Thanks for the common-sense reply. I will try this out and post back if
there are any other problems.

Thanks

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System
and Application logs for the last attempted shutdown and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Gerry,

Thanks again for that. I will check out the event viewer or problems and
post if appropriate.

It is quite annoying. Last night it took 5 attempts for the Switch User to
even work. I suspect it could have been nero since I never could use the Task
Manager to kill the process. I can't remember whether there is a common link
between running nero and the inability to shutdown. Last night I uninstalled
nero and re-installed the oem version.

Thanks Gerry and have a good day.
