Shutdown problem

Hi,
hoping someone can point me in the right direction -
Just formatted hard drive, installed XP home (previously 2000 Pro)
all good, just can't shut down pc....
monitor goes off but machine keeps going until I hold the on / off button in
for seconds...

any ideas appreciated

After you did your clean install, did you then install all the XP
drivers for your hardware? If not, you need to do so. See the general
information about drivers below. Also, failure to shut down is often
caused by a program/process refusing to exit gracefully. This can be a
driver, something legitimate but invasive such as certain antivirus
programs, or malware. Since I don't know what you've got installed, go
through this shutdown troubleshooter:

Drivers:

Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific
model machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers
anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor or System Information for Windows

Thanks for your reply
only hardware I had installed was network card, video card at the time of
the re-install
I have downloaded the video drivers from Nvidia and I unplugged the network
card to test - same result
I will try to access network card drivers next
I figured it was something like this - but where does it stop, how do you
know which drivers Windows assigned during install - ie; motherboard etc...

will keep trying

Rules of Thumb (Rule of Thumbs?):
1. No Operating System (OS) has drivers for hardware manufactured
*after* the OS was released (2002 in the case of Windows XP).
2. For the OS to properly assign resources for subsequent hardware,
you must first install the chip-set drivers for the Motherboard (MoBo). If
your MoBo was released *after* 2002, refer to #1.

E.G.:
First, obtain drivers for MoBo and all other hardware.
Second, install Windows
Third, install MoBo drivers.
Fourth, install other hardware drivers.
Fifth, enable Fire Wall.
Sixth, go online to download/install Windows Security Updates & OS
patches.
As previously mentioned, *NEVER* obtain hardware drivers from Windows
Update.

This will help with a problem Malke touched on.

Third party drivers also need to be checked for updates.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK. What
drivers are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which are not checked.

Have you looked at the Warning and Error Reports in the System and
Application logs in Event Viewer?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.
