I have started receiving the error message "X application
has encountered an error and must shut down, etc".

Regardless of application (Juno.exe, explore.exe. bachup
utility, wiaacmgr.exe among others), the error message
sent to Microsoft identifies the faulting module as
comctl.dll and the fault address as 0x0005efbd.

I haave tried to restore to a point when everything was
Ok, but the problem persists.

Hi Frank,

Start/run sfc /scannow

Have your WinXP CD handy or know the location of your I386 folder on your
hard drive, as you may need it.

Hi Frank,

So what exactly can you do? Do you have any system functionality at all?

Thanks, Rick....but Explorer is one of the apps that
won't run....what now?

That should not stop you from using Start and taking Run to run
sfc /scannow

HAve the CD ready in the drive (exit the autorun first) in case, but
there is a very good chance it will get the replaced file from the ones
that are cached.

A second possible approach, as you know what the specific file is, is
to use Start - All Programs - Accessories - Command Prompt (Or Start -
Run and run cmd.exe)

In that give the commands

CD \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32
ATTRIB -H -R -S COMCTL.DLL
REN COMCTL.DLL COMCTL.OLD

That will result in the windows File Protection promptly getting a fresh
copy of the file from the cache of dlls.
EXIT
Give it a minute to be sure the replacement has happened, and close and
restart to bring the fresh one into use
