shutdown/logoff/restart does nothing

I have already visited Resources to Help Troubleshoot
Shutdown Problems in Windows XP

but it did not provide any help.
It doesn't freeze/hang at all. It just doesn't do
anything after selecting one of the above.
I have to end the directx.exe process in task manager in
order to do any of the above to get out of Windows.
Please help!! I'm begging....

You appear to be infected with something. I searched
directx.exe in Google and wound up at:

The discussion there involves 'backdoors' - which are a
method that lets people gain access to your computer.
